The Artist

Ellen Fishburne's art appears In the “Carolina Sketchbook” section of each issue of South Carolina Wildlife magazine. Their January/February 2022 issue showcased her watercolors of a Pileated woodpecker and Catesby's gentian on the front and back covers.

A feature article compares Fishburne's natural history illustration methods to that of 16th Century English naturalist and artist Mark Catesby. Accompanying the article is a time-lapse video of Fishburne at work in the field. Subscriptions to the magazine are available here .

Fishburne grew up in Statesville, NC, receiving private instruction from Louise Gilbert. She earned her BFA in Communications Art from East Carolina University and resides in Columbia, SC.
